Running the Race: Hebrews 12:1-2 Explained

Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages believers to run the race with perseverance, fixing their eyes on Jesus.

Have you ever watched a marathon and found yourself inspired by the determination and focus of the runners? Maybe standing on the sidelines, or watching through a screen, you were moved by their perseverance and endurance. There’s something about a race—a long and arduous journey—that mirrors our own life’s journey. It’s this powerful imagery that the writer of Hebrews uses to encourage us in Hebrews 12:1-2, and today, I want to dive into this passage and explore the depth of its meaning for us.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

Hebrews 12:1-2

The Strength of a Cloud of Witnesses

Isn’t it comforting to know we are not alone in this journey? The image of a “great cloud of witnesses” refers to the heroes of faith mentioned in the previous chapter of Hebrews. These are people who have run their races before us and now stand as testimonies to God’s faithfulness. When we think of them—Abraham, Moses, and others—we’re reminded that the struggles and challenges we face are neither new nor insurmountable.

But what exactly does this “cloud” mean for us today? It suggests a powerful truth: Our faith is part of something much greater than ourselves. These witnesses are like an invisible cheering section, urging us on, reminding us that faith is worth it, that God is trustworthy. It’s an encouragement to see ourselves in the continuum of God’s story, a story that goes back thousands of years and will continue beyond us.

Shedding Encumbrances

The writer advises to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” Imagine trying to run a marathon with a heavy backpack weighing you down or ropes tangled around your feet. It’s almost impossible to make progress, right? The same is true in our spiritual journey. We carry burdens—fear, doubt, guilt, or habits—that can stall or slow us down.

But how do we identify these burdens? Sometimes they can be obvious, like actions or thoughts that lead us away from God. Other times, they may be subtle, like priorities that shift our focus from God’s purpose for our lives. The encouragement here is to actively “throw off” those things, to recognize their weight, and seek God’s help to remove them from our lives.

Running with Perseverance

We often hear the phrase “life is a marathon, not a sprint,” and it holds so true when pondering over this biblical metaphor. Perseverance is key—not speed. It’s about maintaining the course, keeping on even when it’s tough. Life, like a marathon, involves moments of vulnerability, pain, and endurance, but it also involves joy, growth, and reaching the finish line.

Here, the action of running with perseverance involves a conscious and continuous effort. Even when we’re faced with setbacks, fortified by faith and the hope that comes from knowing we are never alone, we continue running.

Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus

The passage beautifully concludes with the exhortation to fix our eyes on Jesus, the “pioneer and perfecter of faith”. Jesus is our ultimate example in this race. He ran it perfectly, showing us how to live a life of complete faith and trust in God. Fixing our eyes on Him means looking to His life, His teachings, and His sacrificial love as our guiding inspiration.

What does it mean to fix our eyes on Jesus? It means prioritizing His ways over ours, placing our hopes squarely on His promises. It means living with the awareness that He sees us, knows our struggles, and has already paved the way for us to succeed in our spiritual journey. It’s about relentless focus, not allowing life’s distractions to draw our attention away.

Life’s race can be challenging, but Hebrews 12:1-2 reassures us we’re equipped to persevere. We draw strength from the testimonies of the faithful who’ve come before and look to Jesus as our ultimate guide. So as you lace up for another day in this beautiful, unpredictable marathon called life, remember: You’re surrounded by witnesses and led by your perfecter, Jesus Christ. Run well, my friend.
