Alive in Christ: Insights from Colossians 3:12-17

Colossians 3:12-17 teaches how to live as those made alive in Christ.

There’s something wonderfully freeing about discovering who we really are, like peeling back the layers to reveal our true selves. The letter to the Colossians, particularly in chapter 3, verses 12-17, offers us a profound insight into the heart of Christian identity. It’s not about rules or regulations; rather, it’s a call to embrace who we are meant to be through our connection to Christ. Let’s take a closer look together at how this passage reveals the richness of a life lived in love and unity.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:12-17

Clothing Ourselves in Virtue

It’s quite beautiful how Paul chooses the metaphor of clothing to describe these virtues. We all put significant thought into the clothes we wear, don’t we? It’s almost instinctive. Yet, here, we’re drawn to consider putting on *kindness*, *humility*, *gentleness*, and *patience* like a cherished outfit. These aren’t just qualities to aspire to in public but the everyday attire of our inner selves. The imagery here is profound—imagine waking up each day, consciously deciding to “put on” compassion just like we choose our favorite sweater.

The Power of Forgiveness

Paul challenges us with an essential, yet sometimes difficult, concept: forgiveness. When he says, “*Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone*,” he’s inviting us into a place of freedom. Forgiveness releases us from the burdens of bitterness. And why forgive? Because we have already been forgiven so much—what a powerful motivation! It is as though Paul is gently reminding us of the grace we continuously receive and encouraging us to extend that grace to others.

Love: The Binding Thread

Thinking of love as the thread that “binds them all together,” I’m reminded of how important it is to every aspect of our lives. Love acts as the cohesive force that keeps compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience together. Without love, these qualities may merely be acts of obligation. However, love transforms them into genuine expressions of our faith and devotion.

The Peace and Gratitude of Christ

What if peace could actually *rule* in our hearts? Imagine a heart guided not by chaos or contention, but by peace. Paul’s words imply that this peace isn’t just a fleeting feeling—it’s an active, ruling force. And with that peace comes gratitude—a core part of our relationship with God. If peace governs our hearts, thankfulness follows naturally as a reflection of the peace we find in Christ.

The Rich Indwelling Message

Paul doesn’t stop at virtues or peace; he emphasizes gratitude and wisdom as we teach one another. The idea here isn’t merely about imparting knowledge, but truly letting “*the message of Christ dwell among you richly*.” The richness is in the depth and breadth of how we understand and live out our faith. It’s about deeply absorbing Christ’s teachings and living them out fully.

As we move through our days, let us carry with us the notion that “*whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus*.” This isn’t a burdensome demand but a gentle reminder that our simplest actions can reflect the magnificence of God’s love. Live with grace, extend forgiveness, and let love bind your heart to the divine peace we all seek. As we walk in this way, we’re not just living; we’re truly *alive in Christ*.
